MAGSTM, an energy generation appliance fueled by waste
Terragon’ s novel Micro Auto Gasification System, or MAGSTM, is the world’s most compact, efficient and environmentally safe technology for the conversion of a variety of combustible materials into thermal energy for use by the site where these materials are generated. MAGSTM can be used to eliminate all combustible by-products produced by a ship, community or institution, while sterilizing the inorganic portion of the waste. Waste streams that can be easily treated by MAGSTM, without the need for segregation, include but are not limited to paper/cardboard, plastics, food, oily rags, oils and sludges.
MAGSTM is used to generate over 2,400 kWh of energy daily by processing up to 1 tonne per day of combustible materials.
MAGSTM uses Terragon’s patented technology, the Auto Gasification Process, to thermally break down hydrocarbons in waste and transform them into a small volume (5%) of harmless residue (bio-char) and energy.
The treatment reactor is about the same size as a 55 gallon drum. A safe and simple to operate lid is used by the operator to load a bag of mixed waste with no pre-treatment of any kind. Combustible liquids can be fed automatically without the need for an operator. Within the drum, the waste is heated and breaks down to carbonaceous char (bio-char) and a gas consisting mostly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (syngas). In Terragon’s proprietary Auto Gasification process, the synthesis gas is used as the fuel for the process. Thus, the waste is converted to inert carbon products by “cooking it” and using the vapours generated from the “cooking” as the fuel for the process.

MAGSTM is fuelled by a variety of combustible material
- Municipal Solid Waste
- Biomedical Waste
- Contaminated Packaging
- Hazardous Waste
- Sewage Sludge
- Illicit Drugs
- Oily Sludge
- Confidential Waste
In MAGSTM, the syngas becomes the main fuel, thus minimizing the need for external fuel sources and rendering the appliance virtually self-sustainable. Efficient combustion of the syngas is accomplished in a combustion chamber operating under controlled temperature and air flow conditions. Once the hot exhaust gases transfer energy to the gasifiers, they are quenched with water, eliminating the potential for the formation of dioxins and furans and then cleaned to remove particulates and acid gases prior to discharge.
How MAGSTM Works
MAGSTM Char Removal
- Up to one (1) tonne per day processing capacity
- Generation of up to 2,400 kWh per day of thermal energy (hot water or space heating)
- Integrated gas cleaning and energy recovery
- Closed loop quench and scrubber eliminate:
- Dioxin and furan formation
- Release of hazardous pollutants including particulates and acid gases
- Automated biochar removal system for simplified operation
- Simple operation: no waste pre-treatment, easy waste loading
- Flexible configuration or containerization
- Fully automated and available for remote monitoring
- Sequesters carbon from waste to reduce CO2 emissions
The calorific value contained in solid waste (including paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, wood and food) can be converted by MAGSTM to thermal energy, at a rate of about 100 kWh per hour of operation, with a processing capacity of about 50 kg per hour. The calorific value of sludges can also be recovered by MAGSTM and often yields even higher thermal energy generation rates, depending on the sludge composition.
|Total Weight||4,400 kg (9,700 lbs)|
|Overall Dimensions (multiple configurations)||2.8 m (L) x 1.8 m (W) x 2 m (H) (9 ft x 5.9 ft x 6.6 ft)
2 m (L) x 3 m (W) x 2 m (H) (6.6 ft x 9.8 ft x 6.6 ft)
|Nominal Solid Waste Throughput||The throughput depends on the bulk density of the waste being treated. A typical waste loading containing 50% food would result in the treatment of approximately 50 kg/hr (110 lb/hr).|
|Sludge Oil Throughput||18-3025 L/hr (4.7 – 7.9 gal/hr)|
|Operating Temperature in Gasifier||up to 650 °C (1,200 °F)|
|Operating Temperature in Combustion Chamber||1,100 °C (2,012 °F)|
